March 26th, 2009

lgarena

T-Mobile recently announced that they will be stocking the LG Arena in “titan black”.

The new moodier hue will be exclusive to T-Mobile UK customers and should be available to buy at the end of the month. The rest of the networks will have to make do with mediocre silver.

LG Arena Released Date Announced (Finally)

March 23rd, 2009

lgarean

Omio, the mobile phone comparison site, has just published a post detailing the exact details of the release of the latest LG handset. But hold on there are conflicting accounts with eXpanys and mobiles.co.uk both announcing different dates! eXansys has the date of 10th of April while mobiles.co.uk announce the KM900 release on the 27th. Either way, assuming one of these is the right date, then we’ll be able to get our hands on the Arena at long last.

Firms Fight Over LG Launch Date

March 23rd, 2009

lg-arena2

The LG Arena’s two biggest retailers are fighting over who has the correct release date for the phone. Expansys.co.uk and Mobiles.co.uk both have contradictory information about when the LG KM900 is available for purchasing.

Expansys’ “expected release date”  is 10th April for a SIM-free handset costing £425. Mobiles.co.uk are offering to ship the phone on the 27 March (that’s this Friday) but you’ll have to sign with a network provider to secure an order.

Ordering your phone from Mobiles.co.uk works out cheaper than buying through Expansys but there are, of course other options if you want to get your phone through a specific contract.

You can get the phone for free on O2 if you sign up to a 24 month contract and through T-Mobile you can get the phone for £180 on a 12 month package.

LG Arena debuting in the UK this week?

March 19th, 2009

It may be  available in March but some folk in the know are predicting the KM900 being available in UK shops as early as this week.

Unfounded presumption or spot on guess?

There’s only about a week left in March so if LG want to keep their fans happy they’ll have to stay within that promised March release date.

On the other hand pinning down any precise release date is still a tricky undertaking. There’s still confusion about which networks will be carrying the device; Orange has a ‘coming soon’ sticker attached to the KM900 on the website and the LG section of T-Mobile’s online shop appears to be down, for some reason.

Whatever LG are up to, we’ll be posting specific launch dates and prices as and when we get them.

LG Arena Vs Samsung Omnia HD

March 16th, 2009

samsung-omnia-hd

It’s battle of the touch screens, it’s an old refrain, one that we will no doubt continue to hear as handset manufacturer battle it out for the smart phone top spot.  Hot on the heels from the LG Arena vs Samsung Tocco Ultra S8300 battle, here’s the latest grudge map, Samsung’s i8910 Omnia HD verses our favourite Arena.

Touchscreen

LG Arena - 3 inch TFT touchscreen and S-Class UI

Omnia HD - 3.7inch OLED touchscreen, acceloremator and proximity server.

Band

LG Arena - Tri

Omnia HD - Quad

Air Interface

LG Arena -GSM/HSDPA

Samsung Omnia - GSM/HSDPA

Dimensions

LG Arena - 55m x 106mm x 12mm

Omnia HD -58mm x 123mm x 12mm

Weight

LG Arena - 105g

Samsung Omnia - 149g

Connectivity

LG Arena -GPRS, 3G, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, USB, GPS

Omnia HD -32-48 kbps GPRS, 3G, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, v2.0 Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS support and Xtragps navigation

Camera

LG Arena -5 meagpixel, autofocus

Omnia HD -8 megapixel, autofocus, blink shot, face/smile recognition, geotagging, flash, high def video camera

Messaging

LG Arena -Push email, MMS, email

Omnia HD -MMS, Email

Music

LG Arena - Audio player, FM radio, 3.5mm audio output jack

Omnia HD - DvX/Xvid/WMV/MP4 audio and video player, 3.5mm audio output jack

Internal memory

LG Arena - 8 GB internal memory

Omnia HD - 8 or 16 GB internal memory

The Omnia is a superior media phone with a better audio player and camera.  The Samsung Omnia has more potential internal memory as it can be upgraded to 16GB whereas 8GB is the highest level of memory available on the LG Arena.

The Samsung Omnia is slighter larger than the LG Arena and weighs more. However the Omnia has a much bigger screen than the LG Arena.

The LG Arena has superior HSDPA and Wi-Fi, meaning over all internet connectivity is better on the LG Arena.

Although the Omnia HD beats the LG Arena in certain areas it is no means a clear victory for the Omnia HD. The LG Arena still is superior to the Omnia in certain ways, most noticeably its design which (in my opinion) is superior to the Omnia. The only area where the Omnia truly tounces the Arena is with its camera. However, the camera is not often a priority for all mobile phone users and although the Arena can’t match the Omnia HD in terms of its megapixels, 5 megapixels is still an impressive amount for the Arena to have.

LG Arena KM900 Hands -On

March 13th, 2009

All quiet on the LG Arena front. There was such a fanfare of excitement when the phone was unveiled in February but since then it’s all but dried up. The LG Blog hasn’t even updated its page since the 27th of February. Come on guys all I want is a crumb of news, just a new video, anything. We’re desperate here! So unfortunately there’s no new news but there is another informative video about how the KM900, straight from the LG Blog itself. It is over 2 weeks old though. Sad face.

I do like the fact that all LG staff, no matter how high up have to include the grey/pink palette into their outfits making them all look like past-it air stewards on a Latvian Airlines flight circa ‘97.

LG KM900 - 3G Review

March 12th, 2009

lg_arena_km900_review4

Until we get our eager mitts on the LG Arena we have to rely on hearsay, speculation and the occasional video. Well, here’s a turn up for the books, an actual review of the LG Arena KM900 with photos from 3G.co.uk.

Interesting points:

  • It’s so lightweight that the phone feels as if it should be quite low-tech
  • The S-Class UI is a tad disappointing but makes navigating the phone tremendously easy
  • Thumbs up for 5 megapixel camera and 8GB internal memory
  • Battery life is an improvement on previous models
  • A first rate media phone
